Tattoos That Carry Spirit: A Deeper Way to Mark a Journey

Jun 26, 2025

There’s something about tattooing that still takes my breath away. Not just the lines, not the color palettes, not even the designs themselves—but the energy, the soul, the reason behind the ink. I’m not here just to decorate bodies. I’m here to hold space for transformation.

That might sound like a big claim, but if you’ve ever sat in my chair, you know.

Sometimes, it’s not about getting something new. It’s about reclaiming. Rebuilding. Honoring a moment that reshaped you.

The Body Remembers—So Let’s Mark It With Intention

I recently had the honor of working with someone who reminded me of everything I love about this work. A woman, a mother, a midwife—someone who has walked with life and death in the same week, sometimes the same hour. Her journey wasn’t just personal—it was deeply spiritual. And she wanted to mark it.

Not with a Pinterest design. Not with a trend.

But with something that honored what her family had endured. What her daughter had survived. What her own body had held through surgeries, uncertainty, and small miracles.

She wanted the tattoo placed along the same stretch of her spine where her daughter had undergone surgery. Same spot. Same space. But this time, not marked by fear—marked by beauty, courage, and color.

Rainbow, of course. Because her daughter’s favorite color is rainbow.

When Healing Walks Into the Room

I don’t take lightly the energy someone brings into the studio. When people choose me, it’s often because they’re not looking for a typical tattoo experience. They're looking for something sacred.

That’s what this session was. Sacred.

Her daughter came in too. Showed me her scar. It was so tender and honest and real. And in that moment, it felt like we were all witnessing something beyond art—this was generational healing happening in real time.

I got to be the artist, yes. But I also got to be the witness.

And when her daughter hugged her mama after it was done, I knew: this is why I do what I do.

The Power of a Redo

Let’s talk about reclaiming bad tattoo experiences—because we’ve all had them, right?

She had another tattoo—one that held deep meaning, tied to music and memory. But the experience was rushed. The prep work was nonexistent. And the outcome? Let’s just say it didn’t match the vision in her heart.

I could feel her disappointment still sitting there under the ink.

So we redid it. Carefully. Together.

And what we created was a burst of rainbow sun over the tattooed heart design—still rooted in the same meaning, but now aligned with her soul. Her daughter saw it and said, “It looks like joy.”

Exactly.

That’s what tattoos should feel like. Not regret. Not compromise. But joy. Truth. Resonance.

Tattoos Are More Than Art—They’re Testimony

When we tattoo with intention, we’re telling a story that the body will carry forever.

We’re not just “getting inked.” We’re archiving a chapter.

The loss. The fight. The rise. The radiance. The next breath.

And when that work is done in collaboration—with space to speak, to feel, to say yes or no—it becomes more than a tattoo. It becomes a turning point.

So, if you're in a season where something big has cracked you open—maybe it's time to mark it. Not just with art, but with something that mirrors your soul.

Here's What I Hold True in My Studio:

  • Consent is sacred. Every line, every placement, every moment is yours to call.
  • Prep matters. We take our time, so the work can live well.
  • Meaning drives everything. Even if it’s just for you, it should mean something.
  • Energy is everything. I don’t rush sacred space. We hold it, together.

Your body tells a story. You get to decide how it's written.

This Is What I Call Soul Work

Sometimes we’re not ready to talk about what we’ve lived through—but we’re ready to wear it. To make it part of us, instead of something we hide.

And sometimes the tattoo becomes the doorway.

A bridge between the before and after.

A celebration of the ones who walked beside us through the fire.

A quiet rebellion against fear.

A love letter to survival.

And sometimes, just sometimes, a little girl looks at the art her mom got for her and says, “It looks like happiness.”

That’s enough for me.
